Chapter Nine

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

Psalm 31:24

* * *

“Emma, Emma. Whatever is the matter with you?”

Isobel opened one eye and saw her Grossmammi’s mouth opening and closing. She yawned. “Is it time to get up?”

“Jah, of course it’s time to get up.”

Isobel sat up in bed; it was hardly daylight. “It’s not even light.” Isobel held her head; she knew she shouldn’t say such things. If she was going to pretend to be Emma, she needed to do what Emma usually did. Apparently that was to get up unusually early in the morning.

“Are you unwell?” Her Grossmammi leaned over her and peered into her face.

“Nee, it’s just the excitement of my birthday dinner yesterday.”

“Nee, I think you may be coming down with something. You don’t look very well.” While Grossmammi was walking out the door of the bedroom, she said, “I’ll give you a shot of castor oil after breakfast.”

Isobel hugged her knees to her chest. Castor oil? Had she heard correctly? Well, I hope she forgets about that, she thought. Isobel threw back the covers and stepped over to the window. She drew back the curtains to let the dim morning light in. “The sun’s not even up,” she murmured, as she leaned on the windowsill and looked across the fields.

Isobel changed out of her nightdress and got into one of Emma’s dresses. Today, she chose the brown dress, hoping it would set off her blue eyes. But who will notice? she thought. Maybe Hosea will visit me again today.

She remembered Hosea asked to drive her home from the next singing, but how was she going to find out when that was, and how would she get there? First things first. I need to get through this day of chores.

“Breakfast is ready,” she heard her Grossmammi calling from downstairs.

Isobel had only just managed to put her apron on over her dress and she still hadn’t done her hair. She quickly coiled her hair on top of her head, fastened it with pins and fixed the white prayer kapp in place, before she went downstairs.

Grossmammi was sitting at the table where two meals were waiting. Emma considered her Grossmammi might be cross with her staying in bed too long.

“Ohh, sorry I’m late.” She sat at the table behind the waiting boiled eggs and toast. “This looks gut.” Isobel looked up at her Grossmammi and saw that she had closed her eyes so she closed hers as well.

A moment later, Isobel heard the click of a fork against Grossmammi’s plate so she opened her eyes. Must have been a silent prayer before eating, same as the dinner last night, Isobel thought, and then she made a mental note to always close her eyes before eating.

“We’re best to do the washing and then the gardening,” Grossmammi said between mouthfuls.

Isobel nodded and wondered what kind of washer and dryer they would have without electricity. Isobel had never gardened in her life.
